EDITH KANAKA'OLE FOUNDATION

The Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation is a cultural based organizaation established by the offspring of the late Luka and Edith Kanaka'ole. The Kanaka'ole brothers, isters, and their children started the Foundation in the summer of 1990 in memory of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. It was also founded on the vibrant traditions of their cultural connection which they inherited from their forefathers.

The rich experiences of the extended family came from their father's side of the family in Ka'u. Their paternal grandmothers was a la'au lapa'au. Their maternal grandmother was a practioner and recipient of the tradition of Hula Kapu. The knowledge and understanding gained from this background was not only a gift but the foundation from which they sprouted.

The intention of the Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation, a nonprofit entity, is to provide scholarships for higher and cultural education. Monies earned from specially designed cultural workshops, traditional rites of passage, and performances, provide the primary source of income for the scholarships.
